I don’t know how anyone could not admit to Phelps being the greatest ever. What he has accomplished is nothing short of astounding. While everyone will remember his 7 golds in Beijing as perhaps his greatest Olympics, I have been just as mpressed with his performance in London. It’s very hard to come back from dominating a Games like he did in China to trying to be on top again four years later and he’s been gutting it out all week. The 200 IM and 100 fly swims were awesome testament to his talent, his years and years of training, and his mental toughness.
The numbers are pretty convincing. He’s had greatness and some longevity. I would think it would be a tough argument to top Phelps right now.
Phelps is the man of the hour, not the politically correct hero the tea sippers would like, but let them eat crow.
They’re not just giving away medals….maybe we should suggest Coe try those events before advising us on the difference between successful and great…but then it is just an opinion…lets see it was 4 olympic medals for Coe, 5 for Redgrave, Thompson 2, owens 4, oh yeah, I see the comparison… (just for the record, I have zero medals from the olympics so may not be qualified to critique…)
I think until someone repeats what he has accomplished – then he is the best ever – right now no one is there except Michael.
I had the pleasure of working with Michael early in his career. Even at an early age, he was one of the most impressive athletes I’ve ever seen (and I’ve worked with winners of more than 50 Olympic golds) Most impressive to me wasn’t the sheer number of medals he won, but it was the early performances he returned with technique that was anything but spectacular. When the strokes matched the physical talents, he became unstoppable.
And, while it’s true that he won a lot of medals in a “stacked” sport, it was against a group of athletes worldwide who weren’t just pushovers….he routinely destroyed world champions, world record holders, and olympic medalists alike. While the TV loves the silly gymnasts, it’s clear that Swimming is the premier sport in the Olympics worldwide.
Perhaps Mr. Coe is considering athletes who excelled in multiple disciplines, which, as a track guy, means decathlon / heptathlon / pentathlon , and perhaps the sprinters/jumpers. I’m not sure that being excellent in four strokes isn’t comparable, but given Mr. Coe’s focus, I’ll suggest Jim Thorpe.

But any reasonable analysis puts Phelps up there alone–the number of medals and the longevity alone make him unique.
Was Larissa laytiana the best ever before Phelps broke her medals record?
Bob Beamon gets my vote in another category. Greatest gold medal winning performance, in the long jump, from the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Beamon broke the old world record by 21 3/4 inches, and the record stood for almost 22 years. It is such an unbelievable video to watch, still to this day, as Beamon suffers a cataleptic seizure moments afterwards, brought on by the emotional shock of his jumping distance. It still gives me chills.
Phelps gets my vote for greatest Olympian, however.
Right Pete, Larissa Semyonovna Latynina: a Russian woman winning medals in the 1950s….not much of a chance for real recognition in my opinion…
