Here’s a text I received from Air Force coach Troy Calhoun. This is his tribute to KOAA sports anchor Lee Douglas, who died over the weekend:
“Lee could cover athletics in a professional yet heartfelt way. He loved Colorado and especially the Colorado Springs and Pueblo communities. Sports is much more thoroughly covered today than 30 years ago; yet Lee had a unique ability to still provide a fresh and open viewpoint.”
Troy shows much more class than the Air Force Hockey coach did the other night on the KKTV sports piece from Jesse Kurtz.
I was sincerely saddened to head of the passing of Lee Douglas…I spent 11 years living in Colorado Springs and certainly was very interested in local, college, and professional sports. ..Lee Douglas provided honest, in-depth, and accurate coverage of all sports with enthusiasm and integrity…I will miss seeing him and his obvious passion for all sports…Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and co-workers…The Mangino Family.
Jake – I thought Frank Serratore’s tribute to Lee was refreshing and funny, but that’s me.
Why did you think Frank’s tribute lacked class? Would like to hear your view.
Dave – a time and place for everything; we all grieve differently. Fortunately for most of us, we don’t have to do it with a camera running. Brief video clips are too prone to misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and even misrepresentation. I had no idea, nor could I have, that the coach gave a sincere eulogy before the cameras rolled. I’m sure he’s a stand up guy, I just was sincerely unsettled by the clip. As a viewer, I liked Lee Douglas; I didn’t even know he has just passed until I saw this ” perhaps” miss timed video clip. Maybe “lacked class” is not appropriate, perhaps “bad timing for public viewing”. Average Joe doesn’t know these guys like you do, we only know what the TV wants to show us.
Maybe there is a misunderstanding, I was referring to the brief Monday night clip on KKTV with the Hockey coach wearing a Hawiian shirt and joking about its “prowness”. That was the first time I learned of Lee Douglas’ passing; I guess I missed anything Sunday because of the “Super Bowl”. There wasn’t much lead in to the story at all; so learning about Lee’s passing for the first time Monday evening and watching this clip was really strange. So if you can block out all the other information you knew and only look at this snapshot for the first time, maybe you can see how an average viewer might say ” What the…”
No misunderstanding. We’re talking about the same brief, although I saw the clip on KOAA instead of KKTV. Can understand why you found the clip jolting since it was the first time you had heard about Lee’s death.
I guarantee you that Frank did not intend to be disrespectful to Lee. He was extremely upset about Lee’s death.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I understand where you’re coming from.
Serratore loves the attention, he’s a goof.
He opened his mouth and broke NCAA rules a few weeks ago when he said he would buy the players lunch if they won and they would have to buy him lunch if he lost.
Personally I think Serratore is an idiot publicly and a compliance directors nightmare, but he he knows how to coach the lesser talent he gets at Air Force.
Calhoun is the total package and a true class act representing AF.
Calhoun has a ways to go – a long ways – before he’s accomplished as much at Air Force as Serratore has.
Not a criticism of Troy. Just an observation.
That hockey program was nothing before Serratore arrived.
Calhoun might someday accomplish as much as Serratore has.
But Calhoun isn’t there yet.
And I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about the dreams of compliance directors.
Do you, Ed?
Wow Ed. You have missed the boat on Frank. Do you think if any AFA coach was a “compliance directors nightmare” that he or she would be employed at the school for 15 years? Go to a game sometime. (Mercyhurst is in town on the 17th & 18th) Watch how hard Frank and his staff work. Watch how hard the Falcons play. Those kids are not of “lesser talent”. Frank has built a great program. Goof? Idiot? No way.
Exactly come to the game versus Mercyhurst. AF Hockey plays weak weak non-scholarship hockey programs. Bentley, Canisius, American International, Sacred Heart, Niagara, a non-scholarship UConn hockey program. He is successful because of his competition. Those games are a joke to pay money for.
AND telling players you will buy them lunch if they win IS an NCAA violation.
Calhoun plays real teams and is a class act, unlike the goofball Frank. Frank should be in Hollywood, he loves the camera. I bet his wife was not happy about his comment.
This is a real question for hockey fans in the Colorado Springs area.
Feb. 17 and 18, both CC and AF are at home.
Nebraska Omaha at Colorado College (2 of the top programs per the PairWise rankings and both teams have future NHL players on the roster)
Mercyhurst at Air Force (neither team is ranked or under consideration with the PairWise)
The World Arena is a much nicer all around facility for fans than Cadet Ice Arena.
Now why would you go to Cadet Ice Arena over going to World Arena the weekend of Feb. 17-18?
I know most people would pick the CC game, but what I’m trying to understand is who is picking the AF game over CC and why?
I’m not trying to be a jerk. I honestly am trying to understand this. I hope for good honest feedback.
